The New Year

So it’s here, there’s no escape, 2011 has arrived!

Christmas is slinking, without grace, into the dark winter night, leaving us curled up next to our fire, wondering whether it was all worth it; whether it could have gone better. This is true of many of us and is as inevitable as the turkey sandwiches we have to eat until February. Something else which is also common is the inevitable flurry of New Year’s resolutions that follow this period of indulgence and stress, all designed to give us a much needed kick up the backside to start doing all the things we know will improve ourselves and our lot.

Only, if we are honest, our list probably looks quite similar to last year’s list:

Next year’s resolutions probably won’t be too different either, not when, by the end of January ninety percent of those resolutions would have been broken – leaving us feeling flat, powerless and ashamed for not having the necessary ‘focus’ to see these things through.

We are not alone – not by a long chalk!

It’s a common issue with any changes, especially those of us who feel we need to improve, that we build ourselves up and then, when we inevitably fall short of what we think we want, we beat up, mentally argue and generally berate ourselves about our shortcomings and perceived failings and this helps no one.

I’ve done it – many, many, many times. I’ve made those lists of New Year resolutions and I have even managed to break one of them before writing the last line. It’s like we purposefully set ourselves up for failure.

There are ways to help this and to bring us to a place where we will believe and ultimately achieve these promises to ourselves; there are techniques to make every goal so much simpler than we tend to otherwise make it.

I would like to share a few of these tips with you over the coming months in this blog. Please feel free to comment and/ or to contact me. If there are any questions or topics you wish to discuss then please let me know and we can work it out together.

The most important things to realise about making ‘ambitious’ commitments to yourself are patience and focus. It doesn’t matter who you are or how positively inclined you feel yourself to be, staying positive and focused is not always the easiest trick in the box. The world, in general, is not trained towards the positive and the fact is – being positive is the key. There is simply nothing you cannot be, do or have when you focus on the positive outcome of your desire and then live with belief and self-respect for who you are becoming and will continue to always become.
